The sewing unit incorporates a sewing machine and a feed installation with a workpiece holder, which is driven by at least one drive unit for the execution of a predetermined movement path. A monitoring device acting in accordance with the movement of the workpiece holder is provided. The relative movement between the workpiece holder and the monitoring device is used for the scanning of a marking corresponding to the preset movement path. The monitoring device is connected to a control circuit, which effects the discharge of switch signals for the operating of the drive devices when the workpiece holder deviates from the preset movement path.
