In the cylinder head of a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine provided with hydraulic valve clearance adjusting elements, a separating element is arranged for obtaining an essentially air-free lubricating oil fraction. The deaerated lubricating oil is fed to the adjusting elements by way of a common secondary flow passage, whilst the lubricating oil fraction permeated with air is used for lubrication and cooling at other points in the cylinder head.
