PURPOSE:To obtain the titled element having a large non-linear susceptivity by comprising an optical fiber type waveguide composed of a core member of a thermotropic liquid crystal high molecule having a unit of large molecular polarizability as a side chain of the molecule, and a clad member composed of a material having less refractive index than that of the core parts. CONSTITUTION:The core (clad) member is composed of the thermotropic liquid crystal high molecule having the unit of the large secondary molecular polarizability beta as the side chain, and the clad (core) member is composed of the material having the lower (higher) refractive index than that of the core (clad) member. Said thermotropic liquid crystal high molecule easily orientates the high molecular main chain in a parallel direction to that of stress, and each units of the side chain in a vertical direction to that of stress respectively at the time of acting the mechanical stress to said liquid crystal high molecule in a melted state thereof, and subsequently solidifies as it is by cooling it. Therefore, in the step of spinning the side chain type liquid crystal high molecule, the unit having the large molecular polarizability beta in the side chain is orientated in the vertical direction against a fiber axis simultaneously/or in an another step, the material having lower (higher) refractive index than that of the side chain type liquid crystal high molecule is located at the outer (inner) circumference of the liquid crystal high molecule.
