Method and apparatus for dividing up a flow of conveyed piece goods (2) arriving on a conveying device (1) into groups, each containing a plurality of such goods. The division is carried out without interruption of the flow of conveyed articles, in the following steps, in a cyclically controlled manner: a) a number of piece goods items are pushed into a call-up position on stop elements above a separating conveyor (3), b) the group is lifted up by a lifting device and conveyed over a short section at an increased speed by the separating conveyor, lowered by the lifting device at the end of this section and set down on a conveyor, c) simultaneously with the lifting and separating-conveying operation, there is a delay before the incoming flow of conveyed articles pushing from behind is pushed onto the stationary stop elements, so that a conveying separation results between the group which has just been lifted off and the following group which is being newly formed. <IMAGE>
