PURPOSE:To prevent the saturation of a display color from reduction with high contrast by constituting a circularly polarizing plate having a polarizing axis parallel with the arraying direction of liquid crystal molecules and polarizing light in the reverse direction against the twisting direction of the molecules of a plane polarizing plate and a 1/4 wavelength phase difference plate. CONSTITUTION:The circularly polarizing plate 9 is formed on a substrate 2. At the time of counterclockwise twisting of liquid crystal 6, a clockwise circularly polarized plate 9 formed by shifting the polarizing axis R of the plane polarizing plate 9a from the optical axis S of the 1/4 wavelength phase difference plate 9b by 45 deg. in the counterclockwise direction is used. At the time of clockwise twisting of the liquid crystal 6, a counterclockwise circularly polarized plate formed by shifting the axis R by 45 deg. in the clockwise direction is used. The so as to be twisted from each other by 90-450 deg.. At the time of turning to OFF, plane polarized light transmitted through the plate 9a is turned to circularly polarized light by the plate 9b and made incident upon a liquid crystal cell, so that the incident light is effectively transmitted into the liquid crystal. Thereby, light loss can be reduced, the contrast can be increased and the saturation of the display color can be prevented from reduction. |
