The thread and fluff brushes are arranged in the floor suction plate of a vacuum cleaner, so that excessive wear on them is avoided and the matter lifted by them is picked up efficiently. The brush pads are of nylon and cotton with a backing strip of polystyrol, and are inserted in recesses in the sole of the plate in front of and behind the nozzle towards which their bristle pile is permanently inclined. Integrally formed protective rims surround the recesses and the lowest edge of the sole fixes the distance between the tips of the bristles and the floor.
