The invention relates to a backwashable filter for separating off mechanical impurities from a liquid. The relatively fine filter orifices within the filter elements are elastically expanded during backwashing so that the filter element is elastically deformed, that is expanded under the backwash stream. In the filtering operation, a filter base supporting the filter element ensures that no significant deformation of the filter element occurs.
