PURPOSE:To prevent recording characteristics from being deteriorated due to oxidation, corrosion or the like, by providing a layer of a high molecular weight substance containing a crystalline thermoplastic resin, on a light-reflective layer. CONSTITUTION:A rewritable optical recording medium 11 comprises a high molecular weight substance 16 comprising a crystalline thermoplastic resin 14 and a noncrystalline thermoplastic resin 15, on a light-reflective layer 12 provided on a base 13. When the high molecular weight substance 16 is heated by irradiation with, for example, light from a xenon lamp to melt the crystalline thermoplastic resin 14 and then the melted resin is solidified at two different cooling rates, the substance 16 can be reversibly set into two states differing in optical characteristics. Therefore, when the parts in the two different states are irradiated with record-reproducing light and the quantities of light reflected from the light-reflective layer 12 are compared with each other, the quantities of light are different. Accordingly, the high molecular weight substance 16 can be used as a rewritable optical recording medium utilizing thermal energy of light. |
