<p>PURPOSE:To enable a cooling time for heat generating elements in a group to be utilized for an energization time for heat generating elements in another group, by dividing a plurality of heat generating elements into a plurality of groups, and appropriately driving the elements on a group basis. CONSTITUTION:A thermal head 8 has a substantially rectangular shape, and is provided with a plurality of heat generating elements 8A in a direction perpen dicular to the moving direction thereof. The heat generating elements 8A are constituted of heat generating element groups 8a and 8b. The heat generating element groups 8a, 8b with the elements arranged at a one dot pitch D in the vertical direction are horizontally shifted from each other by D/2. In recording, the groups 8a and 8b are sequentially driven alternately in the manner of 8a 8b 8a 8b.... The heat generating elements require a cooling time approxi mately equal to an energization time therefor. When the head is driven on a divisional basis for a plurality of groups, the cooling time can be effectively utilized while maintaining the maximum printing speed of the head, and charac ter patterns in two lines can be recorded by moving the head one time.</p> |
