In a method for recognising essentially rotationally symmetric objects, particularly containers which are provided with code symbols, the code symbols are arranged circularly around a centre as radial bars with a luminance factor differing from that of the environment. The area components of the circular ring occupied by the code symbols are independent of a value represented by the code symbols. The code symbols are scanned. A mean value is formed from the signals obtained by the scanning. The signals are binary-coded by using a threshold value which is derived from the mean value, whereupon the binary signals are decoded.
