A plurality of control tables used for controlling the position of an engine throttle valve or of similar devices which influence the power output of the engine are stored in a memory. The wheel slip of the vehicle is monitored and if it is ascertained that it exceeds a permissible limiting value or limiting values, a switch is made from the currently used control table to a lower-level control table which results in a less rapid response in the engine power. If, on the other hand, the speed at which a control element, for example an accelerator pedal, is actuated in the direction of increased engine power is greater than zero and if the wheel slip is below the permissible limiting value or limiting values, and if the control signal supplied by the currently used control table is at its maximum permissible level for the instantaneous position of the control element, a switch is made from the currently used table to a higher-level table which permits a more rapid response of the engine power to the actuation of the accelerator pedal.
