Composite materials made of plastic frequently cannot withstand the required loads and cause difficulties in manufacturing with conventional processes and devices. To remedy this situation, the invention proposes a composite material in which, to improve the mechanical properties of the composite material, a net (15) is embedded between two layer webs (11) preferably made of foam plastic and welded to one another. The invention further proposes a process and a device in which thin layers of the welding surfaces (11) of the cover layer webs (14) are heated by thermal conduction by means of a corresponding contact piece (33) until the foam plastic is plasticated. <IMAGE>
