Disclosed herein is a process for producing 2,6dihydroxynaphthalene, which process comprises the step of oxidizing 2,6-di(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)naphthalene with hydrogen peroxide in acetonitrile, 1,4-dioxane or a mixture thereof in the presence of an inorganic acid of an amount not less than 0.001 time by weight and less than 0.1 time by weight to the amount of the 2,6-di(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)naphthalene.
