PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously obtain the titled compound useful as a special surfactant and water and oil repellent, by reacting a fluorine- containing aliphatic mono- or dihalogen compound with carbon dioxide using a group VIII transition metal complex as a catalyst and hydrolyzing the resultant product. CONSTITUTION:A fluorine-containing aliphatic mono- or dihalogen compound, e.g. perfluorooctyl iodide, etc., expressed by formula I (X and X' are F, Cl, Br or I, except when X and X' are not F at the same time; Rf is 1-20C fluorine-containing aliphatic group) is reacted with carbon dioxide in an organic solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, etc., in the presence of a group VIII transition metal complex, particularly preferably tetrakistriphenylphospinepalladium or bisdiphenylphosphinoethanepalladium and the resultant product is then hydrolyzed to afford the titled compound expressed by formula II (Y and Y' are carboxyl, provided that either one of Y and Y' is F when either one of X and X' is F). |
