A control system for a gas engine having a crankshaft speed sensor, having a speed/load/firing angle characteristic memory which is interrogated during each crankshaft revolution, having a firing pulse generator controlled by the characteristic memory, having a lambda sensor, having a load sensor, having a vacuum-controlled gas pressure actuator for the propelling gas and having a flow mixer for the propelling gas and air. The technical problem is to provide a control system for a gas engine which allows the potential of the gas engine to be fully exploited particularly in lean-burn operation and in the part-load range. A speed/load/lambda characteristic map (36) is provided for transmitting desired lambda values. The desired lambda values which are provided by the speed/load/lambda characteristic map (36) are compared with the actual lambda values and a lambda difference value is formed. To adapt the firing angle to the actual lambda value in each case, a characteristic map (29) comprising a lambda difference value and a load/firing angle correction value transmits a firing angle correction value which is added to or subtracted from the basic firing angle value of the speed/load/firing angle characteristic map (27). <IMAGE>
