The hammer drill has a percussive mechanism (4). To drive the percussive mechanism (4) there is provided a shaft (14) which is set in rotation by a motor and can be coupled to a hollow output shaft (12) for the percussive mechanism (4). For coupling, balls (19) are used as coupling members, which are mounted in radial openings (18) in the output shaft (12) and can be brought by a ring (22) engaging around the output shaft (12) into coupling engagement with the shaft (14). <IMAGE>
