A process for the degradation of a polyhalogenated organic compound comprises irradiating a polyhalogenated organic compound with ultra-violet light to produce a lesser halogenated organic compound and thereafter biologically degrading the lesser halogenated organic compound. The irradiation is performed such that the polyhalogenated organic compound is incompletely dehalogenated while the biological degradation is performed using an organism adapted to degrade the lesser halogenated compound produced by the irradiation of the polyhalogenated organic compound but not adapted to substantially effectively degrade the polyhalogenated compound.
