PURPOSE:To obtain a gas diffusion electrode having large contact area of hydrophilic part with water repellent part and high current density by mixing water repellent carbon black, polytetrafluoroethylene powder, and solvent, heat- stretching the mixture to form fine layer-like gaps, and supporting hydrophilic carbon black in the gaps. CONSTITUTION:Water repellent carbon black, polytetrafluoroethylene powder, and solvent are mixed, and the mixture is heat-stretched to form tine layer-like gaps. A solution obtained by mixing hydrophilic carbon black or hydrophilic carbon black and catalyst with organic solvent or water and surface active agent is impregnated in the gaps, and dried to form a reaction layer obtained by supporting the hydrophilic carbon black or the hydrophilic carbon black and catalyst in the gaps. Since hydrophilic part comprising hydrophilic carbon black or catalyst is arranged between water repellent parts comprising water repellent carbon black and polytetrafluoroethylene, the contact area of the hydrophilic part with water repellent part is remarkably increased and current density is increased. |
