An apparatus for comminuting coarse lumps to usable grain sizes comprises essentially a receiving box 3 for the lumps to be comminuted, a feed device, which is drawn with a chain 20, being provided in the receiving box 3; a comminuting roller 32 which is rotatably mounted in a casing 31 and driven; and an abutment 42 at a distance from the comminuting roller 32. The arrangement is made in such a manner that, in the receiving box 3, a slide 14 is guided in a longitudinally displaceable manner and drawn with a chain 20, that at the upper end of the receiving box 3, a milling roller 32 with picks 39 is provided in a casing 31 and that a milling abutment 41 is arranged at a distance from the milling roller 32 (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
