An apparatus for the cultivation of microorganisms has a porous body which can be filled with nutrient solution and onto whose outer surface it is possible to place the microorganisms to be cultivated. The porous body preferably has an axial borehole which can be tightly closed at one end with a stopper and can be closed at the other end with the aid of an air-permeable stopper. The borehole is filled with the nutrient solution which distributes itself in the porous body as far as the outer surface on which the microorganisms then grow. <IMAGE>
