The present invention involves 2-(5-phenyl-2-furanyl)-imidazoles conforming to the chemical structure: <CHEM> wherein R<1> is mono- or di- substituents selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halo, nitro, trifluoromethyl, straight and branched chain C1-C5 alkyl, acetyl, propionyl, methoxy and ethoxy; and R<2> is mono- or di- substituents selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, and ethyl; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and/or hydrates thereof, pharmaceutical compositions containing such compounds, and methods for enhancing the contractile force of cardiac muscle of a mammal which comprises systemically administering such compounds to a mammal.
