PURPOSE:To easily obtain a plane waveguide which confines light well by penetrating liquid contg. water into a flat plate-like porous glass body, maintaining the porous body in an alcohol, diffusing an alkoxide into the porous body and drying and sintering the resulted porous body. CONSTITUTION:The liquid contg. water is first penetrated into the flat plate-like porous glass body. Such liquid is preferably an alcohol soln. of about 20-100wt% concn. and, for example, ethanol is usable as the kind of the alcohol. The porous glass body impregnated with the water is then maintained in the alcohol. For example, ethanol, methanol, propanol, etc., are used as the alcohol. An alkoxide of an element to increase the refractive index of glass is in succession added to and is diffused into the porous glass body. For example, Ge, P, Pb, etc., are used for said element. The plane waveguide with which the refractive index does not decrease from the surface to the inside of the glass is obtd. if the porous glass body subjected to the treatment is dried and sintered. |
