Method and apparatus for reducing the failure rate of stopping devices on a spinning machine which serve for the stopping of rovings. For test purposes, simulated "yarn running" signals can be fed to the stopping devices, and/or provision can be made for the yarn-break sensing devices to be capable of being cut off by the stopping devices, and for generating from time to time cut-in signals which serve for connecting the yarn-break devices again to the associated stopping devices.
