A system for measuring cyanides in a sample employs a photoillumination component 11A for producing ultraviolet radiation to dissociate cyanides contained in an alkaline sample. The system includes filtering components 30 interposed between the photoillumination component 11A and an alkaline sample to be tested for the purpose of allowing lower frequency ultraviolet radiation to pass so as to produce an irradiated sample in which cyanides have been dissociated, while blocking higher frequency ultraviolet radiation so as to inhibit thiocyanate dissociation. A thin-film distillation unit 11B is included for separating cyanide from the irradiated sample and producing recovered cyanide for measurement purposes. Finally, a measuring component 65 is provided for receiving the recovered cyanide and generating a recordable signal indicative of the recovered cyanide quantity.
