PURPOSE:To stabilize the characteristics of a magneto-optical recording medium for a long period of time by forming an intermediate film consisting of a passivated metal between an intermediate protective film consisting of an oxide and recording medium film at about a thickness at which transparency is not spoiled. CONSTITUTION:This magneto-optical disk consists of a resin substrate 21, as well as the intermediate protective film 22 of the oxide, intermediate film 25 of the passivated metal, magneto-optical recording film 23 of a rare earth- transition metal alloy and surface protective film 24 which are successively formed thereon. Since the intermediate film of the passivated metal is provided between the oxide protective film and the recording medium film, the dense oxide layer is formed by the reaction of free oxygen with the passivating metal, by which the intrusion of the free oxygen to the recording medium film is prevented. The passivated metal of such intermediate film is Ti, Cr, Ta, Al or Nb.
