PURPOSE:To realize an excellent half tone reproduction, by letting electrons out of electron sources scan fine areas sequentially in a splitting direction different from their arranged direction, and making emission-nonemission of each fine area controlled independently by on-off control of each electron source. CONSTITUTION:Three electron sources 1 of a solid electron beam generator are disposed in a vertical direction. Electron beams emitted from each electron source are controlled by a horizontal deflecting means 2 and a vertical deflecting means 3, scanning each picture element 5 on a phosphor screen 4. Hereat, three electron beams configured in the vertical direction are scanned as far as a threefold distance of an electron beam diameter in the horizontal direction whereby one picture element is divided into 3X3 fine areas. When the number of emission areas in this nine divided fine area is altered, half tones of ten steps can be displayed.
