A product for use in combating an infection such as AIDS attributable to a retrovirus is prepared by extracting cells of lymphoid origin and/or liver cells from an animal or human immunised with respect to the retrovirus, disrupting the cells and dialysing or filtering the contents of the cells thus-released thereby to obtain a retrovirus-specific transfer factor.
