PURPOSE:To remarkably improve durability and to obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent functions by forming a vapor-deposited film of the magnetic recording medium of a co-vapor-deposited film with a polymer. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium is constituted of a base film 1, a magnetic coating layer 2, a ferromagnetic material 3, the polymer 4 and a thin film magnetic layer 5 formed by the co-vapor deposition with the polymer 4. The base film 1 is a plastic film such as PE terephthalate film or polyimide film. The magnetic layer 2 is formed by combining magnetic powder such as gamma-Fe2O3, Co-gamma-Fe2O3 or Ba-ferrite and binder and coating the mixture to about 1-10mum thickness. Fe, Co, Ni or the alloys of these 3d transition metals and various elements or oxides, and nitrides including gamma-Fe2O3 are used as the ferromagnetic material 3. Org. high-polymer materials such as polyimide are used for the polymer 4. The co-vapor deposition is executed by physical vapor deposition methods including vacuum deposition, ion plating and sputtering.
