PURPOSE:To require no space for switching back a sheet by connecting the sheet carryingpath of a present reading part and the sheet carrying part of a previous reading part through a turn carrying path and disposing them substantially in parallel at opposite positions to each other. CONSTITUTION:The sheet carrying path of the present reading part 10 and the sheet carrying path of the previous reading part 20 are formed substantially in parallel and oppositely to each other, and both the sheet carrying paths are connected by the turn carrying path for carrying the sheet 1 substantially in a form of U. The sheet 1 is sequentially carried in a direction shown by an arrow by the sheet carrying means 21 of the previous reading part 20, the turn carrying means 31 for carrying the sheet along the turn carrying path and the sheet carrying means of the present reading part 10. The length in a subscanning direction of the sheet carrying means 11, 12 is substantially equal to the length in the sub-scanning direction of the sheet 1.
