PURPOSE:To contrive the simplification of constitution, and the reduction of cost, and furthermore to attain sharp image reading, by arranging each filter, and each image pickup apparatus in the orthogonal direction of the relative moving direction of a document. CONSTITUTION:Image sensors 51-53 consist of a large number of solid-state image pickup elements by arranging them in the direction orthoginal to the moving direction of an original platen 31, and in this way, scan is performed in order on a document in the direction orthoginal to the moving direction of the original platen 31. Thus, a device is constituted so that a bit of blue information on the document 32 passing through a part A can be obtained from the image sensor 52, and also, a bit of red information on the document 32 passing through a part B can be obtained from the image sensor 53, and furthermore, a bit of green information on the document 32 passing through a part C can be obtained from an image sensor 54. And each bit of color information is supplied to a signal processing circuit 60.
