PURPOSE:To efficiently glycosylate even in synthesis of ganglioside, etc., wherein formation of glycoside bond is very difficult, by reacting a specific N- acetylneuraminic acid derivative with an acceptor compound having hydroxyl group. CONSTITUTION:In glycosylation reaction of N-acetylneuraminic acid with an acceptor compound having hydroxyl group (example; methanol, galactose, adenosine, cholesterol, serine, etc.), an N-acetylneuraminic acid derivative expressed by formula I (Ac represents acetyl; R1 represents lower alkyl or aryl; Y represents halogen atom) (example; a compound expressed by formula II, etc.) is used as a donor. The compound expressed by formula I can be produced by first treating 2-chloro-N-acetylneuraminic acid derivative expressed by formula III with 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-7-undecene in benzene to obtain a compound expressed by formula IV, and treating the resultant with a halogenating agent, etc., through an epoxy expressed by formula V.
