In a shaft seal with a radial sealing gap which is formed by a sealing ring (4) revolving with a shaft (3) and by a nonrevolving sealing ring (5) pressed into contact by an element (6) which is flexible in all directions but, at the same time, provides a seal, sealing medium (sealing gas or sealing liquid) is fed through the feed conduits (8) in the nonrevolving sealing ring (5) to channels (26) which distribute the sealing medium at the circumference of the sealing surface. Slot-like spiral recesses (27) are made in the sealing surface either of the revolving (4) or the nonrevolving sealing ring (5). According to the invention, the slot-like spiral recesses (27) start from the channels (26) and are arranged in such a way that the sealing medium is pumped out of the channels (26) into the spiral recesses (27) under the influence of the rotating sealing ring (4). <IMAGE>
