PURPOSE:To easily produce a nitrile in high yield, preventing the decomposition of the nitrile, by dehydrating an acid amide with phosphorus oxychloride in a specific solvent and subjecting the resultant reaction liquid to simple distillation. CONSTITUTION:An acid amide (e.g. monochloroacetamide) is dehydrated in a mixed solvent of an N,N-disubstituted aniline (e.g. N,N-dimethylaniline) or an N-substituted aniline (e.g. N-methylaniline) and a halogenated hydrocarbon (e.g. ethylene dichloride) or an aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. benzene) in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride at 50-60 deg.C. The obtained reaction liquid is subjected to simple distillation and the distillate is neutralized with an alkali to obtains a nitrile having a boiling point of <=150 deg.C. The molar ratio of phosphorus oxychloride to acid amide is 0.55-0.6-1.
