PURPOSE:To selectively separate and recover or concentrate only an organic acid, by bringing a hydrophobic porous membrane contg. an organic soln. of a carrier substance capable of reversibly forming a complex with organic acid into contact with an organic acid aq. soln. CONSTITUTION:A porous membrane consisting of a hydrophobic synthetic polymer is impregnated with an organic soln. consisting of both a carrier substance capable of reversibly forming a complex with organic acid and an organic solvent which dissolves the carrier substance and the complex but is immiscible with water, as extraction liquid. One face of this liquid membrane is brought into contact with an aq. mixture of the organic acid, and the other face thereof is brought into contact with the receptive liquid consisting of water or an aq. soln. having pH higher than the aq. mixture. Thereby organic acid forms a complex with the carrier substance, and thereafter is diffused in the membrane and brought into contact with the receptive liquid and discharged into the receptive liquid. Thus, the organic acid can be separated.
