PURPOSE:To conduct stable, continuous, efficient coal charging even when the cake strength is variable, by applying vibration and pressure to coal, concurrently with the feeding of coal into a plurality of coal receiving cases of a charging car from a coal tank, so as to produce a consolidated cake and then feeding the cake into a carbonization chamber. CONSTITUTION:Charging coal 11 in a coal tank 1 is fed through a rotary feeder 5 and branched coal feed chute 7 provided in a coal feeder 3 into a plurality of coal receiving cases 6 which are provided on a charging car 12, each have a vibrating rod 29 of consolidation means 13 inserted therein and are being vibrated through a vibrator 28. Pressure is applied by the vibration of the vibrating rod 29, and the vibrating rod 29 is elevated in accordance with the feed of the charging coal 11, thereby producing a consolidated cake 16 having a bulk density of 0.7-1.1t/m<3>. Then, the charging car 12 is run on rails 39 so that an opening 35 disposed on the charging car 12 is positioned directly above a hopper 10 provided over a carbonization chamber 8. Concurrently with the opening of a bottom plate 19 through coal receiving case carriage means 31, roller 24 and rails 25, a cylinder 37 disposed in a cake opening means 36 is extended into the case 6 and the upper surface of the cake 16 is compressed by a push plate 38, thereby enabling the coal to be fed from the hopper 10 into the carbonization chamber 8.
