PURPOSE:To markedly increase recording speed, by causing the driving periods of driving means for relative movements in first and second directions to overlap each other and varying the overlap period according to the velocity of the relative movement in the first direction. CONSTITUTION:After a carriage motor 6 and a line feed motor 7 are started, the driving timings thereof are controlled by a concurrent processing of a controlling part 3, and the period of time tLF required for completing a line feed being carried out is calculated for causing a carriage return to appropriately overlap the line feed. Reciprocal scanning of a recording head 5 along a recording medium is performed only after a ramp-up time (a) of the carriage motor becomes large, and recording is performed during both a forward movement and a backward movement of the head 5. When the ramp-up of the carriage motor 6 is finished, the head 5 is driven based on recording data to form one line of record. Accordingly, the relative movements of the head and the recording medium in two directions are carried out in an appropriately overlapping manner, thereby markedly enhancing recording efficiency.
