PURPOSE:To enable to light a lamp applying no high voltage pulse by constructing the lamp so as to have a starting member consisting of a thermal switch and a starting resistance which is arranged on the inside of one end portion of the outer tube and connected to the auxiliary electrode provided in the luminous tube. CONSTITUTION:A metallic vapor discharge lamp is constructed by inserting a luminous tube 2 in an outer tube 1 so as the temperature of the wall of the outer tube 1 facing to the tube wall of the luminous tube 2 is kept over 500 deg.C for maintaining also the high temperature of the luminous tube 2. And a starting member of the lamp consisting of a thermal switch 15 using bimetal or the like and the starting resistance 16 connected in series together is provided in the inside of one end portion of the outer tube 1. And one end of the said member is connected to the auxiliary electrode 9 in the luminous tube 2, and the other end is connected to the main electrode 3 on the opposite side. Therefore the discharge is started between the auxiliary electrode 4 and the main electrode 3 adjacent to the said electrode 4, and shifted to the discharge between the main electrodes 3, 3 when the temperature is heightened, so that lighting of the lamp can be performed with no need of high voltage pulse.
