The invention relates to an air purification apparatus for motor vehicles. The purpose of such an apparatus is to purify the breathing air for motor vehicle occupants from pollutants from car exhausts, solvents of components in motor vehicle manufacture, petrol and oil vapours and residues caused by smoking. In order to carry this out, a multiplicity of purification apparatuses have become known which operate by the most diverse principles. However, all of these have in common the fact that, apart from the advantageous effects doubtless present, they are also burdened with disadvantages. In order to eliminate these disadvantages, according to the invention it is proposed that, apart from introducing chemisorption filter layers, a negative ion generator is connected upstream and a permanently electrically acting dust filter is connected downstream of the chemisorption filter. In this manner, a significantly improved very fine dust separation is achieved and, moreover, the separation of gaseous pollutants is improved. Furthermore, the gentle electrical separation avoids positive ionisation.
