The invention relates to a process for coating an underlayer with metal and to a product which is produced by the process. An extremely thin (substantially less than the wavelength of light) coating consisting of metal particles is layered onto a transfer material. A thin lacquer layer is spread either over the underlayer or the transfer material, and the underlayer and the transfer material are laminated together and the lacquer is hardened. The metal particles are absorbed into the lacquer and the underlayer and the transfer material are then separated. The underlayer has been furnished with an extremely well polished, mirror-like metallic surface.
