Process for the direct reduction of iron ores and equipment therefor

In a process and equipment for the direct reduction of iron in a shaft furnace, reducing gas is generated in a cracking furnace by cracking methane. A part of the exit gases from the reduction process is here admixed to the methane before it enters the cracking furnace. In the cracking furnace, the conversion of the gas mixture into reducing gas takes place in four zones of different degrees of catalytic activity in order to improve the reduction ratio, the next zone in the direction of flow always having more intense catalytic effects than the preceding zone.
