This invention minimizes the pops in the audio output signal in a receiver, caused by Rayleigh fading of the received signal, by utilizing a controllable attenuator in series with the audio output. A first signal is produced which is proportional to the strength of the received signal. A second signal which determines the degree of attenuation is generated in response to the first signal, so that the audio output signal is attenuated during Rayleigh fading when the first signal drops below a predetermined threshold. The threshold is set in accordance with the average strength of the received signal. The attenuation is increased preferably faster (more) than the drop in the received signal level. The increased attenuation results in a lower audio output signal and therefore reduces the size of the pops during the fading. <IMAGE>
