Selective herbicides contain a synergistic mixt. of (a) a 3-(1-4C alkyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4-one 2,2-dioxide or its salt, and one of the following: (b) Q-O-R1 (where Q is mono- or dinitrophenyl, R1 is phenyl opt. substd. by halogen, or CF3 or is 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzylidenamino); (c) R2NHCOX (where R2 is MeO, 5C alkynyl or 5-chloro-4-methylthiazolyl, X is phenoxymethyl ring-substd. by halogen or Me or is dichlorophenyl or lower alkyl); (d) benzoic acid substd. by 1-4 X1 gps. (where X1 is halogen, MeO or NH2; and MeO and halogen or NH2 and halogen or MeO, NH2 and halogen can be present at the same time); (e) 4-Y-benzonitrile substd. by 2 halo gps. (where Y is H, OH or OCO(CH2)6CH3); (f) R3NHCOOR4 (where R3 is halophenyl or aminophenylsulphonyl, R4 is lower alkyl or 4C haloalkynyl), (g) 9-hydroxyfluorene-9-carboxylic acid, (h), O,S-dimethyl tetrachlorothioterephthalate, (i) a 4,4'-bipyridylium N,N'-disubstd. salt, (where substits are Me, CH2CONEt2 or 3,5-dimethyl-4-morpholinylcarbonylmethyl); or (j) 1,1'-ethylene-2,2'-bipyridylium dibromide.
