PURPOSE:To provide the title friction material which is low in cost and has excellent stability with respect to the friction performance under heavy load, excellent wear resistance and mechanical strength and is suitable for use in a brake etc., by coating a carbon fiber with a metal by vapor deposition or plating and then hot forming and sintering the fiber in a reducing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A carbon fiber is coated with a metal (e.g., copper or iron) by vapor deposition or plating, followed by hot press forming. The material thus formed is sintered in a reducing atmosphere, thereby obtaining the title carbon fiber friction material. Since the surface of a carbon fiber receives metal vapor deposition or plating in advance, complicated operations, such as repetition of primary sintering, pitch impregnation, and sintering as required in the conventional manufacturing of a C/C composite are unnecessary in this method. Therefore, this method is suited to efficiently manufacture a friction material at a low cost. Further, since there is a metal film on the surface of carbon fibers, this material can be readily bonded to a structural material such as iron, etc.
