PURPOSE:To obtain a highly crystalline polypropylene readily, by polymerizing propylene by using a specified catalyst precontacted with indene. CONSTITUTION:In a process for polymerizing propylene by using a catalyst comprising a transition metal catalyst and an organo-aluminum compound, the catalyst is precontacted with indene before used to polymerize propylene. This contact treatment is conducted under conditions including a temperature equal to or lower than the temperature in the subsequent polymerization of propylene, a time of several min to several hr and, preferably, the use of at most 0.01-200pts.wt. indene per pt. wt. transmission metal catalyst. This treatment is conducted in a medium inert to a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. When the amount of indene reacted per transition metal catalyst is below 0.001pt.wt., the effect is insufficient while when it is above 200pts.wt., problems such as the defective surface of a molding of the obtained polypropylene arise.
