PURPOSE:To discriminate recording/unrecording in a short time by detecting a signal level of a track sequentially and discriminating it as the presence of recording before a signal level over all range of tracks is detected when the level reaches a prescribed reference value. CONSTITUTION:A recording presence detection circuit 85 is constituted to detect the presence of an RF signal when a recording signal is, e.g., an RM signal, and outputs a high level signal when the recording exists. A system controller 91 uses the circuit 85 so as to sample the RF detection output level in the timing of FG for the signal, e.g., on a track. When the RF detection output level detected sequentially along the track reaches a prescribed reference value, before the signal level over the entire range of the track is detected, it is discriminated to have recording at the track position. Thus, the recording/ unrecording is discriminated in a short time.
