PURPOSE:To prevent damage of a work and to improve processing efficiency, by method wherein the feed speed of a cutting tool is controlled so that the level of noise generated during cutting of a work is set in a set range. CONSTITUTION:Noise generated during cutting of a work is detected by means of a microphone 2, a signal therefrom is amplified by a noise meter 3 and is converted into a noise level to output an output V. provided an output value from a reference data memory circuit 5 is V0, an output K1V0 from a first multiplying circuit 9 produces a first reference value indicating that a work is in a state in that a risk of a work being damaged occurs, an output K2V0 from a second multiplying circuit 10 produces a second reference value indicating that processing is in a processing allowable upper limit value state. And an output K3V0 produces a third reference value indicating that process in a processing allowable lower limit value state. The detected noise level V is compared therewith by means of comparing circuits 12-14, in the case of V>K1V0, an alarm signal is generated to stop the feed of a tool, in the case of K2V0<V<K1V0, the feed speed of a tool is decreased, and in the case of V<K3V0, the feed speed of the tool is increased.
