PURPOSE:To improve the operability of a KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KANJI (Chinese characters) conversion processing device by using for KANA/KANJI conversion in response to a loaded or unloaded state of an external memory part. CONSTITUTION:A candidate store part 133 uses the dictionary information received from a dictionary retrieving part 132 as a parameter to obtain the dictionary data (word information) corresponding to the Japanese reading from a word dictionary part 92A. When a word including the 2nd standard character is included in the dictionary data, it is decided via a central processing part 86 whether an external memory part 84 is loaded or not. While the information on all words included in the dictionary data are stored in a candidate store area 134 when the word including the 2nd standard character is not included in the dictionary data and wen said data is included in the dictionary data together with the part 84 loaded. Then the information on the words excluding the word including the 2nd standard character out of the dictionary data are stored in the area 134 in case the word including the 2nd standard character is included in the dictionary data together with the part 84 unloaded.
