The tool enables an optical fibre to be positioned in a tube with a clearance (looseness) which is a function of the temperature. It comprises a fixed support 10 fitted with means for temporarily solidly connecting the tube; a gripper 30 fitted with means 38 for temporarily solidly connecting a projecting portion of the fibre 22 and of the gripper, which can move parallel to the tube from a predetermined position with respect to the fixed support; a standard bar 26 placed transversely to the direction of the tube having one end solidly connected to the support and another end which is free and which has a bearing surface for the gripper, which surface makes an acute angle with the direction of the tube, the said bar being placed in such a manner that the distance of movement of the gripper from its predetermined position is representative of the correction to be made to the projecting length of the fibre with respect to its completely drawn-out or completely pushed-back position in the tube in order to take into account the differential thermal expansions between the tube and the fibre. <IMAGE>
