The present invention relates to a process for purifying flue gases, containing sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides, hydrogen halides and/or dust, by oxidation of sulphur dioxide in the presence of carbonaceous catalysts with the formation of sulphuric acid or sulphates and subsequent reduction of the nitrogen oxides with ammonia in the presence of carbonaceous catalysts with the formation of nitrogen and water.
