An electrode for electrothermal methods, especially for the production of steel, consists of a section which comprises a cooled metal shaft (20), of an active part (30) which is connected to the lower end of the metal shaft (20) and consists of self-consuming material, and of a contact section (10) which forms the upper end of the electrode and is likewise cooled, by means of which section (10) the electrode is axially displaceable with the electrode holder of the furnace and to which it can be electrically conductively connected. For mechanical retention of and electrical contact-making with such a combination electrode, the contact section is constructed as a component (10) which comprises an electrode section (11) of consumable material with a conventional external diameter, which is provided with a central through-hole (12) through which a coaxial double tube (50) consisting of metal passes whose inner tube and whose annular space between the inner tube and outer tube are used for the coolant inlet and outlet respectively. <IMAGE>
